Dr. Alfred de Zayas of the UN Talks Alex Saab

By Lily Goldklang May 14, 2022

On April 26th, yet another online webinar was held in support of Alex Saab – the Venezuelan diplomat who was illegally detained, kidnapped, and tortured by agents of the United States. The webinar’s keynote sponsors, co-sponsored by the Center for Political Innovation, were Dr. Alfred-Maurice de Zayas, an international human rights lawyer and former UN Independent Expert on the Promotion of a Democratic and Equitable International Order, as well as Camilla Fabri Saab, an ardent defender of Venezuela’s right to sovereignty as well as the wife of Alex Saab. Dr. de Zayas discussed the case in defense of Alex Saab, as well as the baselessness of the case being leveled against him.

Since being kidnapped in Cabo Verde a year and a half ago, Saab has been tortured, mistreated, and malnourished. In October 2021, he was “extradited” to the United States. In reality, he was kidnapped. There is no good basis for Saab to be prosecuted in the United States, as the charges against him, even if they were legitimate, should be litigated in Venezuela. Washington’s real goal is to send a message – anyone who attempts to subvert the US’ global economic hegemony will be punished.

The movement in defense of Alex Saab is growing and the Center for Political Innovation, along with many other groups, has consistently been a part of the national days of action. Demonstrations have been called throughout the United States – from cities such as New York, Washington DC, and Boston, all the way to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Members of the Center for Political Innovation have raised their voices together, loudly proclaiming as one: “Free Alex Saab!”
